Dishwasher Not Draining in Winnipeg: Causes, Checks and Repair Cost

A dishwasher that leaves dirty water in the bottom is usually blocked, not broken. The filter, the drain hose, the garburator connection or a jammed drain pump cause most of these calls, and a clogged filter alone accounts for a surprising share. How it fails tells you what failed

"Not draining" covers several different faults that all leave the same puddle. Listen and look before you call, because the way it fails narrows the cause quickly:

• A little water sits under the filter, but only an inch or so. Often normal. Many modern dishwashers keep a small amount of water in the sump to protect the seals. If it is below the filter and does not smell, it is probably not a fault.
• Water pools above the filter and the machine hums at the end of the cycle. The drain pump is trying to run but cannot move water. Something is jammed in the impeller, most often a broken glass shard, a cherry pit, a label or a bread tie, or the path downstream is blocked.
• Water pools and there is no hum at all when it should be draining. The pump motor may have failed, or the control is not telling it to run. This is the case where a part is more likely.
• It drains slowly and the kitchen sink is slow too. The problem is probably the shared drain line under the sink, not the dishwasher. More on that below, because it changes who you should call.
• It drains, but dirty water comes back into the tub. A missing high loop on the drain hose or a stuck check valve lets sink water flow backward into the dishwasher.
• A countertop cap next to the faucet spits water during the drain. That cap is an air gap, and it is clogged. Pull the cover and clear it.

Six checks to do before you book a visit

These are free, they need no tools beyond a towel and a flashlight, and they solve the problem often enough to try first:

1. Clean the filter. Pull the bottom rack out. On most dishwashers made in the last decade, the filter is a cylinder in the floor of the tub that twists a quarter turn and lifts out, with a flat mesh screen under it. Rinse both under the tap and scrub the mesh with a soft brush. A filter packed with food and grease is the single most common cause of standing water.
2. Run the garburator. If your dishwasher drains through a garburator, run it for a few seconds with cold water. Food sitting in the grinder blocks the dishwasher's inlet port.
3. Think about any recent install. A newly installed garburator ships with a knockout plug inside the dishwasher inlet. If the dishwasher stopped draining the day the new garburator went in, that plug was probably never punched out.
4. Check the drain hose under the sink. Look for a kink, a crush point where the hose was pushed against the back of the cabinet, or a hose that runs straight down with no upward loop.
5. Clear the air gap if you have one, the small chrome or plastic cap on the counter.
6. Cancel and drain. Most models drain the tub when you cancel or reset a cycle, usually by holding Start or a Cancel/Drain button for a few seconds. Check the manual for your model. If it drains now, the fault may be a cycle that was interrupted rather than a blockage.

Is it the dishwasher or the drain?

This one question saves people money. Fill the kitchen sink a few inches and pull the plug. If the sink drains slowly too, the blockage is most likely in the drain line the sink and dishwasher share, and a plumber or a drain-clearing service is the right call, not an appliance technician. If the sink drains freely and the dishwasher still holds water, the fault is on the dishwasher side.

Two Winnipeg situations make the shared-drain case more common than people expect. In older neighbourhoods like Wolseley, River Heights and the West End, a modern dishwasher is often tied into kitchen plumbing that is decades older than the machine, and years of grease narrow those lines until the dishwasher's pump is the first thing to notice. And in a deep cold snap, a kitchen drain that runs through an exterior wall can slow or freeze. If the sink and the dishwasher both stopped draining during a stretch of minus-thirty weather, suspect the drain line before the pump.

Error codes that mean "drain problem"

Many dishwashers flash a code before you even notice the water. The common drain codes on brands we see often in Winnipeg:

• Bosch: E24 usually points to a blocked drain hose or filter, E25 to a blocked or jammed drain pump.
• LG: OE is the drain error.
• Samsung: 5C on newer models, 5E on older ones.
• Whirlpool and KitchenAid: a long-drain fault, often shown as F9 E1 on models with that display.

Dishwashers typically last 8 to 10 years. A drain fault is one of the clearest repair-it cases there is:

• Blockage, hose or jammed pump on any dishwasher that otherwise works well: repair. These are the inexpensive jobs.
• Failed drain pump on a dishwasher under about 8 years old: repair almost every time. A $180 to $350 pump replacement on a mid-life machine is money well spent.
• Drain pump or control board on a unit past 10 years with other problems, such as poor cleaning or a leaking door: this is where replacement starts to make sense, because the next failure is not far behind.
